Thermocouples type R [Pt Rh 13 percent -Pt] and type S [Pt Rh 10 percent -Pt] are used to measure temperature up to 1400C/1600"C maximum; type B [Pt Rh 6 percent -Pt Rh 30 percent or Pt 18] is for temperatures up to 1800C max; and type "C [tungsten 5 percent rhenium/tungsten
26 percent rhenium] for temperatures up to 2300C max.
The thermo-element pair is protected by two or three ceramic/silicon carbide sheaths of various types, depending upon working temperature and environmental conditions. Type KER 610- alumina tube with 60 percent , 80 percent , 95 percent AI,O,; type KER 710 - recrystallised - high alumina tube with 99.5 percent , 99.9 percent A1203 available in 24,20,15,12,10,8 and 6 mm diameter. Holding tubes made of SS 304/SS 316 of 32, 25 and 20 mm diameter are used to hold ceramic sheath with head. Steatite ceramic terminal blocks with nickel-plated terminals; and die cast aluminium/SS mounting head and adjustable flange. These sensors are widely used in glass, ceramic, steel, power plants, etc.
