Product Profile of Networking Chip
Freescale Semiconductor offers a voice-enabled `gigabit passive optical networking` [GPON] SoC [MSC7120], which it claims to be the first in the industry. To deliver a complete PON sub-system in a single device, the networking chip integrates a CPU, a StarCore DSP and a data path engine. This networking chip addresses the high-data forwarding throughout requirements of several applications. This networking chip finds its applications in: the delivery of `triple play` [voice, video and data] broadband services to homes or small businesses. GPON technology supports the convergence of IP over optical networks, offering connection speeds much higher than today`s DSL- or DOCSIS-based networks.
